RESTORATION OF REYNOLDS PLANTATION COURSE COMPLETE

Plantation7The Plantation Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee reopens May 1 after a multi-phase restoration project to the award-winning design by architect Bob Cupp. As a component of the comprehensive restoration a flexible short course routing has been added for golfers who want to carry only a few clubs and play only a few holes.

The first course built at Reynolds Lake Oconee, The Plantation Course opened in 1988 as part of the new community along the shoreline of Georgia’s second largest lake. Now one of six world-class golf courses at Reynolds Lake Oconee, the Plantation Course has been refreshed from tee to green.

Part of the Plantation Course renovation is the new “Quick Six”—a unique six-hole “course within the course” that offers a variety of tee box options while utilizing the existing greens on hole Nos.1-2-3 and Nos. 7-8-9. None of the “Quick Six” holes play longer than 130 yards, so a “round” will take approximately 60 minutes.

“We designed Quick Six to be fast, easy, and fun” said Mark Lammi, vice president of golf at Reynolds Lake Oconee. “We want golfers of all ages and skill levels to enjoy this wonderful game, and sometimes, an hour or so is just perfect. With Quick Six, they can play a few holes or more, if they want, and still have time to enjoy all the other things Reynolds has to offer.”

The updates and enhancements to the Plantation Course include:
• Restoring all 18 greens to their original size and shape and replanting them with Penn A-1 bentgrass
• Reshaping all tee box areas and adding forward tee boxes to seven holes
• Removing 11 non-strategic bunkers while adding three new bunkers
• Reshaping all the bunkers and installing the Billy Bunker system—to improve drainage and prevent erosion—previously implemented at two other Reynolds courses, National and The Landing
• Enhancing overall growing conditions with selective pruning that increases air flow and sunlight
• Rebuilding cart paths
• Refreshing and reinforcing creek banks
• Installation of nearly two miles of subsurface drainage
• Enlarging the practice area
• Adding nearly 10,000 ornamental grasses and plants
“Bob Cupp worked closely with our Vice President of Agronomy, Lane Singleton, to restore the course to its original character,” Lammi said. “The goal was to reanimate this terrific design in a way that could be efficiently maintained and also to give our guests and members, and first timers, an entirely new way to experience the game.”

“At 6,200 yards from the member tees, the Plantation Course is one of the most player-friendly golf courses at Reynolds,” Lammi said. “It complements the balance of our golf collection with great aesthetic value, as well as shot value.”

Reynolds Lake Oconee is a vibrant community of nearly 4,000 multi-generational families and their friends who share a passion for golf and the outdoors, while savoring their time together. Located along one of the most treasured lakeside settings in the country, Reynolds Lake Oconee has established itself as a leader in sports and leisure activities on land and water, as well as a cultural and culinary center with a passion for music, the arts, and regional cuisine.

Besides golf, Reynolds Lake Oconee features four marinas, the Lake Club wellness center, and an award-winning tennis center. Reynolds also has developed into a popular vacation destination, anchored by the The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee, a 251-room lakefront resort and spa, which was named a 2015 AAA Five Diamond Lodging and 2014 Forbes Four-Star resort.

Lake Oconee LogoOne of the premier junior golf events in the world is coming to Reynolds Lake Oconee this summer when the Rolex Tournament of Champions is played on the Great Waters course, June 28-July 1.

An invitation-only event on the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) schedule, the Rolex Tournament of Champions is a national event for boys and girls, ages 12-18. The field will be determined by the Polo Golf Rankings, a proprietary system that takes into account wins and top finishes in national events, and will include a number of Rolex Junior All-Americans, who are determined in October of each calendar year using the Polo Golf Rankings to honor the best 96 overall junior golfers and the Rolex Junior Player of the Year.

The 2015 Rolex Junior Players of the Year Hannah O’Sullivan of Chandler, Arizona, and Philip Barbaree of Shreveport, Louisiana, won the 2015 Rolex Tournament of Champions and set 72-hole scoring records on the Crosswater Course at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon. Barbaree posted a 24-under-par 264 in the Boys Division, while O’Sullivan finished at 14-under-par 274.

Begun in 1978, the Rolex Tournament of Champions is one of the two longest-running AJGA events. Past winners include Inbee Park, David Duval, Heather Farr, Charles Howell III, Morgan Pressel, Webb Simpson, two-time winner Beth Bauer, and three-time victor Phil Mickelson.

The Rolex Tournament of Champions is one of several significant events being hosted by Reynolds Lake Oconee in 2016. The annual Linger Longer Invitational, featuring an elite field of NCAA men’s golf teams, is set for March 21-22, while the local qualifier for the 2017 Drive, Chip and Putt National Championship is to be contested on Reynolds’ renowned Landing Course on June 9.

“Hosting the Rolex Tournament of Champions is a special honor for us,” said Mark Lammi, vice president of golf operations at Reynolds Lake Oconee. “It is another way we can enhance our commitment to engage young golfers. These are the best of the best on the AJGA schedule, stars of the future and the leaders of the next generation.”

The AJGA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women while providing valuable exposure for college golf scholarships. The AJGA has an annual membership (boys and girls, ages 12-18) of more than 6,500 from 48 states and more than 50 foreign countries.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 600 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Jordan Spieth, Brandt Snedeker, Bubba Watson, Webb Simpson, Hunter Mahan, Stacy Lewis, Vicky Hurst, Inbee Park, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, and Brittany Lincicome.

Rolex, a supporter of the AJGA since 1986, is the proprietor of the Rolex Junior Players of the Year, Rolex Junior All-America Teams and the Rolex Junior All-America Awards Banquet. Rolex also sponsors the Rolex Tournament of Champions and Rolex Girls Junior Championship, two of the AJGA’s most competitive championships, as well as serving as an Official Partner of the biennial PING Junior Solheim Cup.

REYNOLDS LAKE OCONEE

Great_Waters11_3343_CRSituated on 10,000 acres, a comfortable distance between the stimulating city pace of Atlanta and the revered tradition of Augusta, Reynolds Lake Oconee is a vibrant community with a highly regarded identity of its own. It is a world apart, but never far away.

While larger Georgia cities are within an easy drive, nearby towns offer superb shopping and dining experiences, as well as nearly two centuries worth of culture and history. Reynolds, established in 1988, is surrounded by the majestic Lake Oconee and its numerous recreation options that enhance the community’s aesthetic appeal.

Members and resort guests of Reynolds Lake Oconee enjoy a caliber of golf excellence that few communities can match. Six courses have been crafted by the most sought-after names in golf course design. With 117 holes draped across natural rolling hills that create subtleties to make each shot unique, there is an endless variety and a rewarding challenge waiting at every fairway and green.

Reynolds Lake Oconee has been named the “Best of the Best” Golf Community by Robb Report, as well as earning elite status as a golf resort, featuring The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee, opened in 2002. Reynolds Lake Oconee has earned the Platinum Medal Resort award from GOLF Magazine and is ranked among the “75 Best Golf Resorts in North America” by Golf Digest Magazine.

“Not only do we have the best collection of golf courses in Georgia,” said Mark Lammi, Vice President of Golf Operations at Reynolds Lake Oconee, “but one of the most impressive in the world, all right here.”

The golf experiences at Reynolds Lake Oconee combine variety, challenge and pure joy in a rare collection of courses that reflect each architect’s passion and character. Together these iconic figures form a “Mount Rushmore” of golf architects, their creative likenesses molded into every fairway, bunker and green at Reynolds. Five of the six courses are open to resort play, each part of a premier collection of designs:

  • The Landing pioneered the golf industry on Lake Oconee when the Bob Cupp design opened in 1986 (originally as Port Armor Golf Club).
  • The Plantation Course, also a Cupp design, was the first course at Reynolds Plantation, established in 1988, and has recently been renovated.
  • The Great Waters Course introduced the legendary Jack Nicklaus to Lake Oconee, debuting in 1992 and renovated by Nicklaus in 2010.
  • The Oconee Course is an idyllic Georgia sanctuary, with designer Rees Jones providing a pure, undisturbed setting for an authentic golf experience since 2002.
  • Tom Fazio designed all 27 holes at the National golf course, the first two nines in 1997 and the third in 2000, returning to oversee a remodeling project in 2104.

Since MetLife assumed ownership in 2012 of Reynolds Lake Oconee, as well The Ritz-Carlton resort, the New York-based financial conglomerate has invested in extensive renovations at the South’s premier lakefront golf destination. Nearly every facet of the award-winning residential golf community has been enhanced.

The AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions is the latest of elite championship golf events to be played at Reynolds Lake Oconee.

Numerous PGA Tour winners have played in the annual Linger Longer Invitational, one of the top men’s collegiate championships each spring: Rickie Fowler (Oklahoma State), Chris Kirk, Harris English, Russell Henley, Brian Harman and Kevin Kisner (Georgia), Brooks Koepka and Jonas Blixt (Florida State), and Kyle Stanley (Clemson), as well as European Tour winner Peter Uihlein (Oklahoma State).

Some of the greatest players in the game competed in the PGA Tour’s Anderson Consulting World Championships – the precursor to the World Match Play Championship – at Great Waters from 1995-1997. Greg Norman won in 1996, with Colin Montgomerie beating Davis Love III in the finals in 1997. Ernie Els was among the final four in 1997, as well.

Other prestigious events at Reynolds Lake Oconee include:

  • PGA Professional National Championship at Great Waters and The Landing (2008)
  • NCAA Match Play Championship at Oconee (2007)
  • PGA Cup (USA vs. Great Britain) at Oconee (2007)
  • Big Break Invitational at Great Waters (2014)
  • Georgia Open at The Landing (2006)

Besides all there is to enjoy on the golf courses at Reynolds, there is plenty to fill the days here. With 19,000 acres and 374 miles of shoreline Lake Oconee is Georgia’s second largest lake, and provides some of the state’s best fishing along with swimming, boating, skiing, camping, picnicking and water skiing.

Other amenities include four full-service marinas and The Lake Club Wellness and Tennis Center. Members can relax by the pools, play a few sets of tennis on either soft or hard courts, take an aerobics class, work out or enjoy outdoor sports and shows.

Delectable dining and casual atmospheres are available at the Great Waters Overlook Room, The Landing Clubhouse, and the new National Tavern.

The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee is surrounded by water on three sides, offering commanding lake views. It features a recently-renovated Spa, meeting space and outdoor infinity pool. The five-story main building fronts the glistening lake, while six separate cottages, as well as The Lake House with four master suites overlook the Oconee Golf Course. Resort guests have full access to a complete gamut of activities and amenities at Reynolds Lake Oconee.

Reynolds is easily accessible via major highways and interstates. The Greensboro Regional Airport provides private plane and jet landing capabilities along with on-site helicopter landing facilities. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, one of the busiest facilities in the world, is roughly 75 miles from Reynolds.

The mission of Reynolds continues to focus on providing a special place of dramatic natural beauty and recreational possibilities. Here, members have everything they need to create lasting memories, to forge new friendships, and to cherish family connections.
